The use of the Broselow Tape is recommended in the management of all ill children. Please familiarise yourself with this.
WeightMean weight of newborn = 3.5 kg
Mean weight of children in kg can be estimated as follows:
0-12 months (age in months)/2 + 4 kg
1-5yrs (age + 4) x 2 kg
6 – 12 yrs (age x 3) + 7 kg
Paediatric Airway
Oropharyngeal airway
Correct length is from the middle of the mouth to the angle of the mandible.
Nasopharyngeal airway
Correct length is from the tip of the nose to the tragus of the ear.
Correct diameter is an airway the same diameter as the child's little finger, or which will fit into the nostril.
Endotracheal tube
Normal diameter is worked out from formula: Size of the tube = 4 + Age/4 (uncuffed)
but always have one size larger and smaller available and if there is severe airway obstruction it may be necessary to use a much smaller ETT.
