Resus procedural skills training
Galway ED prides itself on providing a high quality of diverse resuscitation procedural skills training. We see a significant volume of chest trauma, which is largely a mix of agricultural and motor vehicle trauma. In order to maintain our currencies, all of our Registrars receive training in the management of chest trauma through high-fidelity procedural simulators, made and modified by our EM consultants. This includes Chest drains (open and seldinger), Ultrasound-guided Subclavian Central Line Access, Serratus Anterior Plane and Erector Spinae Plane Nerve Blocks, and Humeral IO access.
For those who already have had wet-lab training in Resuscitative Thoracotomy, the Procedural Sim team also prepare simulators to practice microskills (e.g. stabbed myocardium wound repair, lung injury repair). The wet-lab course endorsed by the Galway ED is the Prehospital and Emergency Resuscitative Thoracotomy (PERT) course held regularly at the Royal College of Surgeons England in London.
