Galway-Baragwanath
Fellowship in Trauma Resuscitation
Galway EM is delighted to partner with the one of the largest trauma centres in the world at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Centre, set in the 3rd largest hospital in the world in Soweto, Johannesburg, South Africa.
What sets the unit apart is its high volume of penetrating trauma, including gunshot wounds, stabbings, and other forms of violence that are less common in the Global north.
While many trauma centres in the Europe primarily manage injuries sustained from blunt force trauma such as road accidents or falls, South Africa faces a unique burden of violent trauma due to social and economic factors. This has given CHBAH’s trauma surgeons unparalleled expertise in managing complex, high-stakes cases that involve multiple organ injuries and require advanced surgical intervention.
Fellowship Description:
This is an intensive 3-month fellowship, focused on gaining advanced critical care training in trauma resuscitation. Responsibilities include all management of trauma intubations, management of knife and gunshot wounds, central line access (including subclavian), and emergency ultrasound.
Though the focus of work will be in the 16-bed Vicky Jennings Resus Room, the fellow will also have opportunities/responsibilities in the Trauma ICU, Burns Unit, and Trauma theatre.
Given the significant volume of trauma, many research opportunities also exist, and research topics/priorities will be discussed with the fellow and Bara Trauma before arrival.
