Emergency Ultrasound

University Hospital Galway hosts a comprehensive Emergency Ultrasound Educational Program tailored for Emergency Physicians in a busy urban ED.

Ultrasound is routinely used to support clinicians in delivering advanced care for critically ill patients, with a strong emphasis on echocardiography, focused trauma assessments and ultrasound guided procedures.

The Ultrasound programme is led by Dr. Turcuman, who is Trauma and Emergency Ultrasound fellowship trained, BSE level 1 accredited EM consultant, he is also a FUSIC/FAMUS supervisor, and is an ICEMT & RCSI national ultrasound instructor. He is supported by experienced FRCEM trained faculty who teach on courses across Ireland, including EGLS and RCSI workshops.

Our team delivers weekly educational sessions covering an extensive syllabus introducing novice learners to core aspects of Emergency Ultrasound and supporting experienced learners in building their logbooks, providing supervision and guidance towards their Level 1 accreditation. Mentorship is available to all EM Trainees and doctors not in training signed up with the RCSI accreditation process.

Custom made task trainers are provided to help simulate complex practical skills such as Chest Wall Nerve Blocks, Subclavian Vein Cannulation, Difficult IV Access. Learners participate regularly in structured workshops designed to reinforce newly acquired practical skills and improve procedure safety.

The Emergency Ultrasound Program complements the existing FAMUS Heart & Regional Anaesthesia programs established in UHG, enjoying excellent support from very experienced Intensive Care colleagues.
