Galway EM Research Day

Galway EM hosts an annual Emergency Medicine Research Day which looks at all the Research, Quality Improvement Projects, and Clinical audits done in the ED over the past year. Awards are given to the top projects for SpRs/Registrars, SHOs, and our Interns/Med Students.

See below for our recent award winning projects from the Galway EM Research programme in 2024.

2024 Bayer/IAEM Research Bursary

Dr. Evan White was awarded the 2024 Bayer/IAEM Research Bursary by the Academic Committee at the Irish Association for Emergency Medicine. His study will look at the “Prospective validation of the SCAT6 for patients diagnosed with concussion in the Emergency Department”.

2024 RCEM Undergraduate Research Award

Dr. James Phelan and Dr. Thomas Quinn, supervised by Dr. Marcus Jee and Dr. James Foley, won the 2024 RCEM Undergraduate Research award for their work on the LACTATED Study.

Dr. Phelan presented this work at RCEM’s Annual Scientific Conference in Manchester.

Galway University Hospital Annual Research Day - 2024 winner for best poster

Dr. Stephen Sheridan won the 2024 Galway University Hospital Annual Research Day prize for Best Poster for his Quality Improvement Project - REFRAME: Reframing Frailty in the Emergency Department.

Our 2024 SHO Winner was Dr. Wilma Fouche, who’s Quality Improvement Project worked on our Paediatric Foreign Body Ingestion pathway. This important work has helped the Galway EM Team improve care for an important and common presentation in our ED.

The 2024 top Registrar project award went to Dr. Maury Guerrero and Dr. Ella Murphy for an audit on the management of suspected DVTs. This audit has led to a further review of our management and ongoing work which has led to reduced Patient experience times in the ED.

The 2024 Award for Best Intern/Med Student Project went to Dr. Niall McCormick and Dr. Ralph Golden for their Audit of “Time to ECG for Chest Pain Presentations to the ED”. This audit has contributed to an ongoing quality improvement project currently undertaken by one of our SpRs.
